firebird

Sept 2005 Update: The idiocy never ends -- they've renamed it to firefox.

It's finally come to this. I actually tell newbies to use firebird now, a mozilla derivative. I, and many in the know, realize that Internet Explorer has fatal flaws, not least of which are its vast unpatched security holes and susceptibility to malware.

For a long time I did not recommend firebird (moz) over IE simply because mozilla was too darn slow on decent machines (400mhz). Now, for the very first time, I have witnessed a reversal of fortunes, whereby firebird is actually faster than IE5.5sp2 (Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2).

Btw, you can get old browsers at evolt.

I saw the speed difference on a pentium II 233, where IE5.5sp2 scrolls the pages so slowly since smooth scrolling is enabled by default. On firebird it isn't, so its actually useable on this machine. What a sad world we live in when bloatware threatens to encroach on liveable silicon.
